Since ancient times, working with smoke has been a recognized practice. In antiquity, the use of incense was common across ancient cultures, primarily for religious ceremonies and medicinal applications, and sometimes as a source of light or for pest control.
For instance, in Judaism, incense is mentioned in the Temple services—a mixture of spices burned on the altar every morning and evening, specifically referenced in the Pit'um HaKetoret prayer. In Christianity, a fragrant mixture is often dispersed to aid connection with the divine during prayer. In Islam, incense is commonly used against the Evil Eye, in exorcism rituals, or for illumination. In Native American traditions, it is used in the peace pipe and for medicine. In the East, incense is used to eliminate bad odors, appease deities, and accompany prayers and requests for success.
Working with incense and smoke acts as a gateway to the energetic world and transmits healing from our world to higher realms as the smoke ascends. Smoke work is beneficial for passive healing and bypasses the mind by the mere inhalation or encompassing of the person in the smoke.
We will explore the world of incense healing.
